Artist Statement

As an artist I am a storyteller, so for this virtual exhibition I decided to take a trip down Memory Lane using some of the self-portraits I have created. On the one hand, this seems like a lot of navel-gazing. On the other hand, each painting represents both a moment in time and a particular way of thinking. Generally, I create artwork in a specific series focusing, I would even say obsessing, over subjects. While I am in the phase of experiment and research for each body of work, I create a self-portrait to get me started. Sometimes the artwork is, for me, a success. Sometimes it finds its way into the trash bin. Still others, it gets taken apart and reused in other ways. All provide a lesson in the use of materials, conceptual blending, and metaphorical thinking.

Artist Statement

In my most recent work, I am influenced by the process and imagery of Francis Bacon.   I was attracted to the open doors and the introduction of animals.  While I am not always sure of how I will use the images that attract me and inspire my painting and drawing, they are woven into my narratives and assume a personal meaning.
